The Picture we have at the Moment

There is a rising tide of anger and frustration among residents in Mile End Ward regarding the escalation of Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) within Mile End Ward. Much of this behaviour has been attributed by residents to alcohol, drugs, and nitrous oxide abuse by young males. Recently there has been incidents of violent crimes, shooting and stabbings.

Residents are reporting that in some cases this behaviour is affecting their lives so badly, some are considering leaving the area. Some have already left. There is a reported perception this problem has increased at the same time there has been a substantial reduction in police numbers in Tower Hamlets.

Reporting

Where residents have spoken to me on their perceived response to their calls about ASB, there were on the whole high levels of dissatisfaction and frustration expressed. This was based on the following:

  • Length of time it takes to log an incident via 101
  • No perceived action taken against recurring anti-social behaviour.
  • Length of time elapsed before anyone attends after a call has been logged.
  • Perceived lack of action by the Council or Social Landlord (East End Homes – Poplar HARCA – Tower Hamlets Homes – Gateway Housing).
